MSc. Textile Science and Technology

The Aims of the Course

To provide a refresher course for graduates already in the colour or colour using industries such as Textiles, Paints, chemicals, plastics and allied industries that wish to benefit from a deeper theoretical understanding of those aspects of science, which are of particular concern to those industries. In addition, the course will provide them with a broader view of colour chemistry and technology as a whole and an introduction to new techniques of value in its study. To provide a conversion course which will enable the holder of a degree in a relevant subject e.g., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or an equivalent professional qualification e.g., A.S.D.C, A.T.I., Post Graduate Diploma in Textile Science and Technology or Post Graduate Diploma in Colour Science and Technology.
It is also intended to produce qualified people who will undertake research programs at PhD level in colour chemistry and technology who will in turn staff the country’s Universities and Research Institutes.

Duration of the Course

i) A full time Master’s Programmes should run for a minimum of 4 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters.
ii) Part-time Master’s Programmes should run for a minimum of 6 Semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters. (However all students are registered as full time students on first registration)
iii) For extension beyond the specified maximum period a special Permission of Senate shall be required.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the MSc degree in Colour Chemistry and Technology must possess:
All candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics, Chemistry and or Physics
A minimum of second class lower degree with a CGPA of 3.25/5 scale in any branch of Textile Science and Technology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or any equivalent professional qualification from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria or from any other recognized institution considered acceptable to the Department and Faculty of Science.
Those applicants who do not possess the formal qualifications specified above, but who possess equivalent professional qualification e.g., A.S.D.C, A.T.I., Post Graduate Diploma in Textile Science and Technology or Post Graduate Diploma in Colour Chemistry with a minimum of CGPA 3.25/5 scale, and have considerable experience in the area of Textiles, Leather, Polymer or Colour using industries, may also be considered.
In all cases, successful applicants shall be required to make up for any deficiencies in their previous training by taking recommended courses within and outside the Department of Textile Science and Technology.
