PGD Fibre Science and Polymer Technology

TEFP702 Polymer/Fibre Processing, Compounding and Additives (2 Cu) :

Review of basic processing operations; casting, hand lay-up, filament, pultrusion. Rotational molding. Reaction injection molding, man-made fibre spinning, texturing of continuous filaments, compression molding, Injection molding, extrusion, calendaring, coating, blown film extrusion, thermoforming, dipping, mixing and compounding, cutting and bonding of plastics, cementing, welding, heat sealing, machining, decorating and finishing, painting, coating, colouring and design, introduction to mathematical modeling and mechanical analysis of processes, CAD modeling. Additives in fibre and polymer processing, plasticisers, fillers, reinforcements and other additives. Polymer blends, interpenetrating networks, sol-gel chemistry.

TEXT706 Identification of Textile Materials:

Physical and chemical methods of identification of fibres, Analysis of mixtures of fibres, Estimation of damage to fibre materials, Determination of amount of size and filling in textile fabrics. Identification of dyes in fibres.

TEFP713 Commodity, Engineering and Specialty Polymers:

Commodity plastics: polyolefins (PE, PP), Vinyl polymers (Styrenics, PVC, PMMA, PVac, PVp) Thermoplastics; Polyimdes, ABS, Polycarbonates, Modified Poly(phenylene oxide), Acetals, Polysulphones, Poly(phenylene sulphide), Engineering Polyesters, Fluoro polymers. Specialty Polymers; polyimdes, and related polymers, Ionic polymers, polyarylether ketone, specialty polyolefin, inorganic polymers, liquid crystal polymers, conductive polymers, higher performance fibres e.t.c. Applications in membranes; separations, biomedical applications; artificial organs, controlled drug delivery, haemodialysis and hemofiltration.

TEFP716 Polymers, Fibres and Composites:

Properties of polymer/fibre molecules, thermoplastics and additives, thermosets, plastics processing technology; injection molding, extrusion, product and mould design technology, advanced material technology, classification of composites, production of composites and characterization.

TEXT725 Management and Entreprenuership:

Analytical methods (decision-making, forecasting, linear programming, waiting-line models, simulation models, network planning), production control (maintenance, inventory control, quality control), selected special topics.

TEXT724 ICT and Research Methodology:

The use of search engines for literature and documentation, spread sheet and Microsoft word software for the writing of projects and thesis. Explanation of ABU Postgraduate school guidelines for the writing of thesis and dissertation, referencing methods, APA, Oxford and Harvard styles, introduction to statistical packages and presentation of research report.

TEFP705 Basic Polymer/Fibre Science and Technology:

Introduction to polymers, classification based on application (plastic, rubber, fibre, foam, adhesisve, paint and composites). Synthesis of polymers; chain growth polymerization reactions (free radical and ionic), step growth polymerization reactions, polymerization techniques, copolymerization, alternating, random, graft and block copolymers. Molecular weight, bulk properties of polymers; introduction to fibre science, natural fibres, fibres derived from natural polymers, regenerated and synthetic fibres, amorphous state, crystalline state, thermal transitions and properties, mechanical properties.

TECT709 Quality Control:

The importance of quality control, control in physical and wet processing. The role of standards in quality audit, framework, types of control, statistical method for solving control problems, quality control charts. Test methods in the assessment and quality control in paints industry, quality control of the chemically processed textile materials. Assessment of colour fastness, health regulations in food and drugs colorants.

TECT714 Financial Management:

Financial planning and control (balance sheet, Profit and loss account, ratio analysis, profit planning, financial forecasting, budgeting), management of working capital (working capital, sources and forms of short-term financing), capital structure (sources and forms of long-term financing, financial structure and leverage, investment decision[the interest factor, cost pf capital, capital budgeting decision]).

TEFP721 Rubber Technology and Polymer Testing:

Rubber technology; classification of elastomers, properties of elastomers, latex and latex products. Dry rubber technology; mastication, mixing compounding, vulcanization, tests for rubber vulcanizates (tensile, tear, fatigue to failure, hardness, swelling, rebound resilience, abrasion ageing, compression set) rubber goods. Synthetic rubbers manufacture and application. Polymer testing; standards and standard organizations, testing of plastics (tensile, flexural impact, hardness, shear, DMA).

TEFP723 Mechanical Properties of Fibre-Forming Materials:

Mechanical properties of polymers. The glassy state and glass transition, dynamic mechanical testing, stress/strain behavior of elastomers, the mechanical properties of crystalline polymers. Flow behavior of polymeric materials as related to the formation of fibers by melt, dry and wet, extrusion, elementary theories of drawing and heat setting. Application of fibre-forming theories to synthetic and cellulosic fibres.
